Antihistamine Toxicosis

چکیده
Antihistamines are H1-receptor antagonists widely used in human and veterinary medicine to provide symptomatic relief of allergic signs caused by histamine release, including pruritus and anaphylactic reactions. Antihistamines are also commonly used as sedatives and antiemetics. 1 Antihistamines can be divided into first and second-generation (also called nonsedating) agents (Table 1). First-generation antihistamines are small lipophilic molecules, so they may cause adverse effects because of their cholinergic activity and their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Second-generation antihistamines are more lipophobic than first-generation antihistamines and are thought to lack central nervous system (CNS) and cholinergic effects when given at therapeutic doses. 2 Antihistamines are often found in combination with other ingredients in many over-the-counter cold, sinus, and allergy medications (Table 2); liquid products sometimes contain large amounts of alcohol as well.

Brodifacoum toxicosis and abortion in an Arabian mare
A 3-year-old pregnant Arabian mare was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz with a history of bleeding and rodenticide ingestion. The results of paraclinical examinations showed severe normocytic and normochromic anemia, decreased serum total protein, albumin, and fibrinogen concentrations, increased serum total bilirubin, urea, and creatinine conce...
متن کاملTherapeutic Effect of Deferasirox and Glycine on Chronic Cadmium Toxicosis in Rats
Objective: It has been shown that deferasirox can reduce blood and tissues lead content in animal models. In this study the effect of deferasirox alone or combined with glycine as an antioxidant was evaluated in chronic cadmium toxicosis in rat. Methods: Male wistar albino rats were exposed to 200 ppm cadmium in the drinking water for 3 weeks and treated thereafter with deferasirox (140 mg/kg),...
متن کاملProton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy based investigation on propylene glycol toxicosis in a Holstein cow
BACKGROUND It is unknown which metabolites are responsible for propylene glycol (PG)-induced toxicosis, and a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms explaining incidences of abnormal behaviour of dairy cows fed PG is therefore needed. METHODS The study included three cows of which one developed PG toxicosis. In order to investigate how the metabolism of PG differed in the cow devel...
